Local Behavioral Health Authority

The Local Behavioral Health Authority (LBHA) plans, manages, and monitors a full range of treatment and rehabilitation services for persons with mental illness and co-occuring disorders through the Public Behavioral Health System (PBHS). Each year, the PBHS serves more than 3,000 Charles County children and adults through programs ranging from individual treatment to housing.

Local Behavioral Health Authority’s Role

  • Promote awareness and education of the community to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and substance use
  • Identifying support services to assist persons with behavioral health concerns to achieve wellness and recovery
  • Developing and maintaining partnerships with local, state, and federal agencies
  • Contracting with public and private agencies to provide services
  • Review consumer and provider satisfaction and process grievances and complaints
  • Sponsoring and providing training programs for staff of provider agencies
  • Evaluate the cost effectiveness and quality of services delivered
  • Review authorized and paid claims
  • Safeguard against unnecessary utilization of publicly funded services
